A win to
Cornwall Green by 16 runs.

A big thank you to Cornwall for traveling over to play us and congratulations on your performance.

For North Harbour, there were some very good individual performances and we came close in two of the matches. I was pleased to see you enjoying your cricket.

A noticeable difference across the games was the standard of fielding. A large parting of fielding comes down to your attitude. We need to be positive, committed and be ready for every ball. We need to learn to anticipate (ie guess) where the ball is going to go to based upon the type of ball that is bowled and the type of shot the batsman is playing. By focusing on every ball and being ready for it then we are going to pick up the catches we missed today, the run-out's we missed, stop the singles, and not let the ball through us to the boundary. Take this away from the matches today boys and learn from it.

Finally thanks to those who contributed to the day including the coaches, umpires, scorers and anyone else who helped out.

Given some of the disruptions we've had, we are looking at having three fixtures in the New Year, beginning in February. See you then.

NH Year 7 Pre-Christmas Fixtures

We now have two fixtures (in addition to the trial) confirmed prior to Christmas 2010/11.
  • Sunday November 7 2010: North Harbour (three teams) v University. Wainoni Park. Early start.
  • Sunday November 28 2010: North Harbour (three teams) v Cornwall.
University and Cornwall are the two strongest Clubs in Year 7 in Auckland, and provide the majority of the players to "Eastern Districts" and "Central Districts" which are two of the five main districts in Auckland region together with North Harbour, Western Districts, and Manukau.

Pencil these dates in. More detail in regards to location, start times etc will follow.

Overview of the NH Yr 7 2010/2011 season

NH Yr 6 – 2009/2010 - End Of Season Review

At the conclusion of the NH Yr 6 season parents were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding trials, selection process, communication, game day management and so forth. The feedback from the questionnaire was overwhelmingly positive, and there were some good suggestions from parents which have been incorporated into this season’s program.

Interestingly the main issue raised by parents via the questionnaires was a request for coaching. North Harbour Junior Cricket policy is that in NH Yr 6 we were not to be involved in technical coaching of the boys, nor are we allowed to in NH Yr 7.

The main reasons for this policy is that North Harbour holds the view that coaching should come through the Clubs, and a desire to not over-burden and burn out the boys (and parents) with additional practice sessions. I have taken this matter up again with the North Harbour committee, arguing to allow additional coaching particularly in regards to batting technique, but the Committee has reaffirmed to me that coaching at this age group must come through Club programs.

Next season (Yr 8 / PSB) we will have the opportunity to operate a Spring Academy for North Harbour boys.

Another major positive to come out of last season is that, as best as I’m aware, all boys involved in NH Yr 6 want to be involved with NH Yr 7 cricket again this coming season. The boys must be enjoying their cricket, which is great.

NH Yr 7 - Overview

In the recent NH Yr 6 season a key focus was on giving as many boys as reasonably possible the opportunity to show their batting and bowling abilities.

That approach, I hope, contributed to some boys developing more than they otherwise would have.

The program evolves from that approach this season with the focus more on selecting boys to perform a specific role with-in the team and allowing each boy to develop in the role they have been given.

In selecting teams in this way, unfortunately, some boys will have less opportunities than others, and it is conceivable that some boys who are primarily batsmen may not bowl and that some boys who are primarily bowlers will not bat. I know this can be difficult for parents, however, while enjoyment always remains the primary focus these are representative teams and I am seeking to develop boys and put them in contention for Auckland age group selection in coming years.

NH YR 7 – Fixtures

I understand the East Coast Bays, North Shore, Hibiscus Coast and Birkenhead (tbc) Clubs will field teams in the Auckland Yr 7 premier afternoon competition this season and that will provide the boys with intense, competitive cricket every Saturday this season. With that in mind, I don’t think the NH Yr 7 program should be over-done.

I am also conscious that the boys are increasingly now involved in School cricket teams and that creates an additional commitment for them. The squad is therefore to have no more than two Sunday fixtures (excluding the October 17th inter-squad trial) prior to Christmas, and probably three fixtures after Christmas. More information will be provided once the planned fixtures are confirmed.

PSB’s (Primary School Boys)

A PSB (Year 8) tournament will be held over Christmas this year. The North Harbour Year 8 Convenor (Rupert Lewis) may involve some Year 7 boys in that Tournament and has contacted some Year 7 boys to trial. Rupert has indicated he has a strong Year 8 squad this year and opportunity for Year 7 boys inclusion in the PSB tournament is likely to be limited. When NH Yr7 boys are involved in the PSB’s, places in the Black and Burgundy sides will be filled by those from the Blue and Green teams.

Wanganui tournament

Both Layne Young and Peter Schierhout have advised that they intend taking a Black and Burgundy team down respectively to the Wanganui tournament this coming January. The U13 boys tournament runs from 10th - 13th January. I will also be discussing Wanganui with Blue and Green coaches. More information on Wanganui will be made available in the next few months.

Important note for Parents re Selection Issues

Should parents have issues with selection related issues, North Harbour Junior Cricket has policy as below (Point 2) on how those issues should be raised. I am the contact person for such issues, in no circumstances should the Coaches be approached, their role is to focus on coaching.

Can you please ensure your boy reads the code of conduct prior to the first Inter-squad game. The code of conduct will be discussed at that time.

NHJC Team Selection Policy and NHJC Code of Conduct

NHJC Team Selection Policy and NHJC Code of Conduct are below.

1. Read and follow at all times the NHJC Code of Conduct which may be viewed at:
http://www.northharbourcricket.co.nz/NHJC-Code-of-Conduct.pdf

2. Accept and understand the role expected of you by your NHJC selector or coach when playing for North Harbour. You may be playing as an all rounder in your club or school team with some success, however, when playing for North Harbour you may be selected in a different position or as a batsman only (or as bowler batting at the tail). Also, trial games are often used to try out new players and different combinations and as a NHJC player you are expected to co-operate during this process.

You (and your parents):
· Must co-operate at all times with your captain, coach, teammates, officials and opponents;
· Must accept any decisions made by a NHJC or ACA official in regard to NHJC team selections, batting and bowling orders and match strategy;
· Are not permitted to approach and question or comment on a NHJC/ACA coach or selector’s decision before, during or immediately after matches.

Should you (or your parents) have an issue or require clarification in respect to your NHJC (or ACA) selection or involvement these may be raised with the NHJC Grade Convenor the day following the match.

If you are not satisfied with the explanation provided you may then ask your Club or School Director of Coaching/Chairperson to raise the matter formally on your behalf with either NHJC or ACA as applicable.

3. Turn up for each game at the time requested by your coach for warm up.

4. Stay till the end of the game unless you have cleared leaving early with your coach/manager.

5. Sit with your NHJC team mates at all times. Support from family and friends is welcome but NHJC are attempting to instil the necessary skills to enable young players to perform at a high level and immerse themselves in cricket. So, when playing for NHJC, our teams sit together as a team and their families and supporters sit away from the teams. Players may talk to their families and they are welcome to come over to the team area, but NHJC ask that players limit the time they spend with outsiders during games or trials. Players will learn a lot more and will become far more of a valued team player if they are always together as a unit.

6. If you cannot make your game, please advise your coach, manager or captain urgently (and at the earliest opportunity) so that a replacement player can be found.

7. Respond promptly to requests for player game availability. When coaches or convenors leave messages (phone or email) asking you to confirm your availability for a trial or game you must reply by the required date.

8. Keep team and personal gear tidy and packed up in gear bag, not spread everywhere.

9. Take pride in representing NHJC. Always wear the NHJC playing uniform (or other advised uniform).

FAILURE TO ACCEPT OR FOLLOW THESE REQUIREMENTS MAY AFFECT YOUR FUTURE SELECTION FOR NORTH HARBOUR JUNIOR CRICKET REPRESENTATIVE SIDES

For North Harbour Junior Cricket Players and (where applicable) their Parents & Supporters

Best regards, we should have a great season ahead.

October 17th trial

We have selected four Yr 7 teams as follows to play in two trial games on Sunday October 17th 2010. The location is Kumeu Cricket Club, Huapai Domain, Tapu Rd, Huapai.

The start time is 12.30pm with an expected finish of 6.00pm. Please be there at 11am at the latest as each team Coach will need time with you before play starts.

The teams below will change through-out the season, although we do intend to keep the core of the Black and Burgundy teams in particular together. It is probable boys from both Blue and Green will be selected into one team to play as a development team in future fixtures.

We have also listed for you the specific role we expect you to play in the games. The role will be the same all season for most of you, however, the role will change for some of you during the season
(particularly those in Green and Blue) as you develop and your skills change. There may also be changes between teams on the day.

Within the next two weeks we intend to provide you with more complete information on how the NH Yr 7 2010/2011 season will operate. Keep an eye on the blog.

In the mean-time, we encourage all boys to spend time working on their game, particularly the role we have set out for them below. If there are Club holiday coaching programmes you can go to, make the most of them, and attend.

If you have thought about getting your boy a little bit of professional coaching, one or two sessions is fantastic at this time of year. There are a list of professional coaches here: http://nhjcy6.blogspot.com/2009/12/cricket-coaches-in-north-harbour-for.html

North Harbour Year 7 2010/2011 representatives

The following boys have been selected for the North Harbour Year 7 cricket squad for 2010/2011 and extend the existing squad.

For those of you who haven't been selected, understandably, you may be a little disappointed, but don’t worry. Many cricketers weren’t involved in rep teams until they were older including Shane Warne, for example, who was 15 when he was first involved in rep cricket. You guys are only 11 and 12.

We will be keeping a regular eye on all boys through-out the coming season and seeing how you progress. We will also need to bring boys into the squad from time to time as injuries and other commitments will mean that the squad is short of players.

If you can take two things away from the trial, the first is to make sure you continue to enjoy your cricket. The second is that, in order to really improve, it is a great idea to start working hard on your technique – particularly batting technique. It is then a matter of practice, practice, practice, play, and enjoy.

Thanks and have a wonderful season.

A squad of 24 boys was selected last season for North Harbour 2009/2010 Year 6. All those boys have been automatically reselected for the 2010/2011 season.

The intention is to extend the overall squad to approximately forty boys after the trials.

The arrangements for the September 18th sessions will be advised in due course.

Should any of the boys above wish to trial as wicket-keepers, advise by return email.

What is North Harbour Year 7 Cricket about?

Our focus is on creating a cricketing environment that allows the boys to develop, improve and enjoy themselves.

The Year 7 program evolves from the Year 6 program in that in Year 7 more emphasis in put upon boys being selected to perform a specific role with-in the team and allowing each boy to develop in the role they have been given.

Fixtures

Given that the majority of the boys in the squad are likely to get very good quality Saturday cricket this year as part of the Auckland competition, the North Harbour Year 7 2010/2011 program is going to be restricted to two or three fixtures prior to Christmas, and two or three fixtures after Christmas. The fixtures will be on a Sunday, and are likely to be approximately 40 overs per innings.

I will be attempting to hold these fixtures against representative sides (there are more representative sides in our age group this year) rather than Club sides and for the fixtures may involve travel. For example, a fixture against Hamilton in Hamilton and Northland in Whangarei are possibilities. More detail will follow.

NH v. Parnell A

The cafe boys from the East side of town came to play an extremely strong NH side. The team list was a who's who of North Harbour junior cricket and justifiably expectations were high. The team, batting first, started off brilliantly with a partnership (Kieran 50* and Josh dR 45) of 107 for the first wicket at a good rate of 5 per over. Kieran retired and Josh dR fell painfully short of his half century and we got a little bit bogged down for a while. Donald (32), William and Josh Down worked hard through some tight bowling and a flourish from Scott (10) at the end took us to 178/ 6 from our 30 overs. At the time, and after the 20 over mark, we thought that this might be 20-30 runs light of where we should have been.

The bowling/fielding was a little bit loose at the start but, with the strength in depth that we had, we were able to rein in their scoring with some excellent fielding from, in particular, Donald Coleman, and apart from a final slogfest, they were always behind the rate required to put us under any real pressure. A good bowling performance from the spinners, in particular Reid (3/20) and William (2/23) along with some tight middle overs bowling from Josh Down, Scott Martin, Max Lewis stifled their run chase. Then Jake Fitzgibbon, Steven Newey (1/22) and Josh du Rand came back at the end to seal the deal. Cole, as always, was tidy behind the stumps and, sometimes, we forget how spoilt we are to have such a good keeper.

As I have said above, and Jean mentioned after the game, their was an air of expectation around this team and sometimes, the levels of intensity in the field were poor. We probably need to work on the fitness and strive to keep our concentration throughout the game; this will be key to success in games in the future. We also need to remember that we are part of a bigger team and that the disappointment of getting out, mis-fielding, bowling a pie etc, needs to be balanced against staying focused for the team. There is nothing worse than seeing someone drop a catch and then mis-field because they are sulking about it.

All in all a very good win; the future looks bright for North Harbour! Big thanks to Jean for coaching, Peter for scooring, Don/Michael for umpiring and all the parents for their invaluable support.

Team: William O'Donnell (c), Kieran Seedall, Josh Du Rand, Donal Coleman, Josh Down, Reid Hastie, Cole Briggs, Scott Martin, Jake Fitzgibbon, Max Lewis, Steven Newey

Scores: NH 178/6 Parnell A 154/8

Result: NH win

NH v. Parnell B

Great win today against a side that, whilst probably not up to NH standards, could have been a banana skin for us. The boys, batting first, racked up an impressive 193/7 from the 30 overs with Eru (49), Sam (19), Chris W (14), Matt (21*), Chris G (25*), Bjorn (18*) and Evan (17*) all contributing. The fielding/bowling was very tight and whilst we had to wait a while for the wickets to start tumbling, they never looked like making the total. Sam (5/8), Scott (2/16), Jack (1/16) and Eru (1/13) were our wicket takers but everyone got a bowl and all the figures were good.

Well done to Eru on captaining the side, Sam Hinds for a five wicket bag and to Cameron Riches for his first NH game. Big thanks to Eddie Hudson (coach) and all the parents for their support.

NH Team: Eru Hudson (c), Sam Hinds, Sharn Fonseka, Chris Woodard, Matt Strain, Scott Gannaway, Jack Stevenson, Cameron Riches (wk), Chris Groenink, Evan Cronje and Bjorn Wojt.

Scores: NH 193/7 Parnell B 110/9

Result: NH win

Wainoni Park, 14th March 2010

The teams for the inter-squad game can be found below. These games will be 50 over games (full PSB rules) and will start at 10:00am (meet at 9:00am) - you will need to allow most of the day for these games.

Please let me know if you are unavailable - as you can see there are 11 players in each team; so we don't have the luxury of substituting players that do not turn up on the day.

This sort of inter-squad will need some parent support; so, on the day, please let your respective coaches know if you can score, umpire or just be an extra pair of hands. Similarly, a chilly bin per team and ice would be very much appreciated - it is a good idea to mark your drinks bottle with your name. Drinks will normally be taken on the field to speed up the game.

NHY7 Fixtures 2010

The intention, with ACA afternoon cricket, was always to keep the fixture list light this season. So I have arranged the following two fixtures before the end of season (note that these teams will be different from the ones that played at Sunnynook - the Burgundy/Black/Green remain the same but the players will change around):

Sunday 7th March (Hato Petera College)
NHY7 Burgundy v. Parnell
NHY7 Black v. Parnell

Sunday 14th March (Wainoni Park)
NHY7 Burgundy v. NHY7 Green
NHY7 Black v. NHY7 Blue

All teams will be selected in the next week or so. However, as you will see, we are trying to get 44+ NHY7 players together on the 14th March. This will allow us to see the strength and depth of NHY7 but, will mean that we will need everyone available on that date. Please let me know if you are not available for either of these dates.
