Thanks boys for the effort you put in at the trial. We have some real talent and some of you are showing big improvements in your game. Sunday April 3rd........

We have a game scheduled this coming Sunday April 3rd against Western "A" for a North Harbour "A" team.

Given the let-down last Sunday, I thought it important to see if we could arrange a second game.

As a result of that, Howick Pakuranga (HP) "A" is available for a game this Sunday. HP "A" are preparing for a tour of Australia at the end of April.

The schedule for this Sunday is therefore:

North Harbour Black v
Howick Pakuranga A
North Harbour Burgundy
v
Western A

The fixture will probably be played at Huapai and start at 9am. Please be there by 8.15am.

Photo's v Manukau

Result: Burgundy v University A

North Harbour Burgundy 147 all out in 49th over
Max Dewe 38 (88), Angus McKenzie 25 (99)

University "A" 148/8 in 49th over
Luke Forgesson, 10ov 2-25, Liam Brown 9ov, 2-25.

A win to University by two wickets.

A close and exciting game out in Huapai today. University bowled well to restrict Burgundy to 147, probably 30 runs short of a good score. Burgundy did though battle well after being 3/25.

After having University 112/8, Burgundy was in with a good chance, but University picked up the runs and the win. There were some good bowling performances from our boys.

A good effort boys in the field, have a think about what you could have done to win this game in the last several overs, and apply it during the next close game you play.

Fixtures for: Sunday March 26th

Update: 7am

Parnell with-drew late last night. The Black game is cancelled.
Burgundy v University is still to be played.

The Blue and Green games to be played at Cornwall Cricket Club are cancelled.
The outfield, pitches, and pitch surrounds are sodden.

I have inspected the Kumeu pitches and grounds. The grounds are are in good shape, as are the bowlers run-up's. The artificial pitches are damp.

The weather overnight and for tomorrow is uncertain. It may improve. it may not.

A decision on the Black and Burgundy games will be made by 7am on the Sunday morning. Keep any eye on the blog.

PSB training squad trial - April 1st.

A PSB (Primary School Boys) training squad trial will be held on Friday April 1st, from 5pm to 8pm at the Massey University Indoor nets. Be there at least 15 minutes prior to your start time.

The primary reason for the trial is to select three preliminary PSB squads (Black, Burgundy and Green) with 16 boys in each in preparation for the PSB tournament 2011. The squads will be selected by squad Coaches.

The boys selected in each squad will be provided with an individualised program by your Coaches that you will each be required to undertake in the off-season.

In agreeing to trial for the preliminary PSB squads you are committing to the 2011 PSB program including:
  • Following the plan your squad Coach sets for you in the off-season,
  • Being available for the PSB Training program including all four indoor net coaching sessions to be held in September,
  • Being available for weekly training sessions with your squad Coach from early September and into December,
  • Being available for approximately four (or five) North Harbour matches to be held on a Sunday from September to December,
  • Being available for the PSB tournament itself to be held from December 27th to December 31st.
In short, other obligations including other sporting obligations will be no reason for non attendance at any of the above.

Selection in the PSB preliminary squad is no guarantee of final selection in a PSB team. It is simply a head-start that gains you entry into the PSB program. The final selection for the four PSB teams for the tournament itself is likely to be in October/November and will be based upon form and team balance issues.

The following boys are invited to attend the trial:

5pm to 6pm:
Adrian Young
Alex Kelly
Andrew Clarke Howard
Angus McKenzie
Asher Robb
Ashton Howard
Callum Gilmour
Campbell Knowles
Dylan Stevenson

v Uni A, Parnell A, v Cornwell dvmt (2), March 27th

The following fixture has been updated. We are playing at Huapai Domain (and now Cornwall Cricket Club - map below), and games are as follows:
  • North Harbour Black v Parnell A, Huapai Pitch 4, Artificial
  • North Harbour Burgundy v University A, Huapai Pitch 1, Grass
  • North Harbour Green v Cornwall development, Cornwall Cricket Club Field 2, Artificial
  • North Harbour Blue v Cornwall development, Cornwall Cricket Club Field 3, Artificial
The Cornwall Cricket Club is one of the best places to play cricket in Auckland, it is a real priviledge to play there. I hope Green and Blue teams enjoy it.

Important note: Both Parnell and University have March 27th set aside as a "rain day" if their respective fixtures to be held on March 20th are postponed. In the event that eventuates, North Harbour Black will play North Harbour Burgundy.

To Dec 31 2011

Introduction

I was recently confirmed as the North Harbour Convenor for the upcoming season.

Once the current season ends the focus moves to preparing for the Primary School Boys ("PSB") tournament which is likely to run from December 27th to December 31st 2011. It is time to put these dates in your Calendar.

At the tournament North Harbour will field two "A" teams and two "development" teams. The tournament is for both Year 8 and Year 7 boys. Selection in any team will be based on merit.

North Harbour will play against other associations from around the Auckland District including Manukau, Central, Eastern, and Western. The tournament is serious, the level of cricket is high.

The tournament is the first opportunity the boys have for selection for an Auckland representative side.

North Harbour Program

In order to prepare the boys for the tournament the North Harbour program is as follows:
  • PSB Spring Training - possibly through August/September/October,
  • Games, every second Sunday from early November to mid December,
  • Possibly separate fielding practices.
The boys to be involved in the PSB Spring Training will be advised as soon as practical, possibly as early as April. Further details on all the above will follow.

Auckland/North Harbour Winter Coaching

In addition to the above, Auckland Cricket will in the next few months ask for nominations from North Harbour for 12 boys to attend an Auckland/North Harbour Winter coaching program. I will make these nominations to North Harbour Junior Cricket and will be seeking input from North Harbour and Club coaches. I am in regular contact with Club Coaches and receive Statistics from Club games.

Winter Sport

I strongly support boys playing a Winter sport if they want to. I believe it is good for general fitness, mental freshness and just plain enjoyment. It can only be good for the boys and their cricket. In fact, there is one boy in particular who comes to mind who played a Winter sport last season to a high level and has come back this season stronger and fitter and as a result of that is bowling considerably faster.

By the same token, I think this year is the right year for the boys (and parents) to think about getting serious about their cricket and doing some of your own work through Winter/Spring after having had a good break for a few months.

Winter Coaching Programs

I understand that the East Coast Bays Club Coach, Nick White, may be taking ECB boys for some group coaching this Winter.

I am also aware that the Takapuna Club Coach, Neil Fletcher, is operating clinics over Winter for batting, and spin bowling for example.

I will provide details of these programs when they become available.

Private Coaching

As boys and parents may have gathered, I am a big advocate of private one on one coaching. It is the only real chance that your boys have to get the specific attention they need on the technical aspects of the game. Some excellent Coaches charge as little as $30 for one hour, and one session even just every month is likely to have good result. I have previously posted Coaches details.

The Wrap-up

The coming season is the first real opportunity we have at North Harbour to really work with the boys. The boys move from being regarded as "development" players to fully fledged North Harbour players. There will be a capping ceremony for those boys who make the PSB squads for the PSB tournament. It should be an enjoyable season ahead.

A big thanks to Kevin Russell for these photo's.

Results v Western Districts

A good day for North Harbour with all three teams earning a win. Well done boys.

Equally importantly today a number of boys, aside from our normal top performers, took their opportunities and performed well.

Looking ahead, we are very keen on seeing our batsmen working hard on your games, practicing outside of normal Club practices in the nets, perhaps getting the occasional one on one coaching session, and improving your batting. There are batting spots up for grabs.
We receive Statistics from Club team Coaches and will be watching Club performances over the next month before naming teams for our next fixture on March 20th. We are also beginning to consider who will be involved in the PSB Spring Training program. Those who work hardest and improve the most will most likely end up getting those spots.

Until the next fixture, enjoy your cricket.

Congratulations go to Cornwall, the deserved winners of the tournament

A big thanks to Bev Russell for her scoring through-out the course of the tournament, and Bill Young and Steve Brown for umpiring on the second day.
